I grew up in a town called Lake Forest, in Illinois.  The Lake was Lake Michigan, a short bike ride from my home.  The Forest was little patches of woods everywhere, including in my back yard. I spent lots of time exploring at the lake shore and woods, so it felt natural to make my home in Vermont.  I’ve been here since the early 80’s, and  I especially enjoy exploring the Connecticut River, Green River Reservoir, and the shores of Lake Champlain.

Over the last 25 years, I’ve shared my love of making things with children in my profession as an elementary school art teacher.  My current art obsession is printmaking.  I learned printmaking by participating in many workshops over the years at Two Rivers Printmaking Studio in White River Junction, a fully-equipped community studio of artists and learners. I’m now a member and workshop leader there.  In 2018 I had the opportunity to travel to the coast of north Devon, England to learn from Merlyn Chesterman, an amazingly accomplished woodblock printmaker who shares my interest in depicting light on water.  I've also spent time at Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland learning from exploratory printmaker Catherine Farish.  In 2024, I received a grant from the Vermont Arts Council to learn mokulito printmaking at Art Print Residence, near Barcelona.

My inspiration comes from patterns and shapes in the natural world, from tree shadows to reflections on a lake’s water surface.   I aim to simplify and sometimes abstract images in nature in order to emphasize beautiful pattern and gorgeous color.  Carving these patterns into a block of cherry plywood is a true meditative pleasure.
I’m also inspired by the children that I teach.  I admire the freedom with which young children approach art making.  So when it is time to roll on inks and print, I experiment with gradations and layers of colors and shapes.  At times, my images are realistic, and at times they become more abstract.  The abstract prints are many-layered and one-of-a-kind, derived from my various wood and linocut blocks.
